Using a Somatic Lens

An Experiential and Informational Program for Therapists

Using a Somatic Lens is a comprehensive training program that offers both experiential learning and up-to-date knowledge in somatic interventions for clinical counselling. Designed specifically for therapists, this program equips participants with practical tools to effectively integrate somatic approaches into their therapeutic practice.

The program combines psychoeducation with hands-on practice, allowing participants to deeply engage with each somatic technique. Each session includes the presentation of a specific somatic skill, followed by guided practice to ensure its effective application.

Core Topics Covered:

  • Identifying survival responses, including dissociation, and understanding their function and appropriate therapeutic responses
  • Clarifying the concept of self-regulation from a felt-sense perspective
  • Building nervous system capacity and resilience
  • Working within the window of tolerance and recognizing its boundaries
  • Understanding the threat response cycle and learning how to respect and work with its intensity
  • Establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries
  • Integrating therapist self-awareness and mental health into clinical practice

Integrated Theoretical Frameworks:

Each mentoring and counselling session draws from a variety of established psychological and neurobiological theories, including:

  • Attachment theory and the impact of relational bonding and disruption
  • Human development theory
  • Polyvagal theory (Stephen Porges)
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) and appropriate integration of inner child work
  • The neurophysiological impact of trauma and current research in traumatic stress and brain plasticity

This integrative approach allows for highly personalized and effective intervention strategies tailored to the needs of individual clients.
